Danieli Group and Kanthal partner on full-scale electric heating solution
Danieli Group, a leading global industrial machinery manufacturer, and Kanthal, a global pioneer in electric industrial heating technology, have unveiled a strategic collaboration to elevate Kanthal’s Prothal® DH electric process gas heating solution to full industrial scale. The partnership aims to achieve fully green DRI production by incorporating Prothal® DH in Energiron plants, a DRI technology co-developed by Tenova and Danieli Group. This introduction in blast furnace operation will significantly cut CO2 emissions in ironmaking.
The heating solution is being developed for hydrogen, natural gas, and their combinations, allowing retrofitting of existing DRI plants. As emphasized by Marco Lapasin, Vice President of Danieli Engineering Centro Metallics, electrifying the heating system in natural gas-based DRI plants can cut CO2 emissions by more than 30%. He also added that the partnership between Danieli Group and Kanthal allows “the unlocking of huge potential for a new technology that will drive Energiron DR plant’s carbon footprint furtherly ahead in the race of green steel”.
Kanthal’s Prothal® DH indeed represents a crucial step toward zero-emission DRI plants. The new partnership aims to scale the technology to industrial levels, reaching up to hundreds of megawatts, with a commercialization target set for 2027. “We are now taking another step towards commercializing large-scale, electric gas heaters, which will be key to substantially reducing or even eliminating CO2 emissions”, stressed Simon Lile, President of Business Unit Heating Systems at Kanthal. “We’re excited to join forces with one of the world’s foremost experts in DRI technology to make the steel industry’s green shift possible”, he added.
